Waukegan, IL – Today, Democratic candidate for Lake County State’s Attorney, Eric Rinehart, released the following statement in response to the fatal police shooting of Marcellis Stinnette on Tuesday night.

Rinehart stated:

“Once again our hearts break over the loss of life in Lake County. I want to express my deepest condolences to the family of Marcellus Stinette and join in the prayers for the recovery of Tafara Williams.

“As we have seen in the cases of Laquan McDonald, George Floyd, Jacob Blake, Rayshard Brooks, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, transparency is key in the search for truth. No one is calling for a rush to judgment, but the family and community is calling for a speedy release of the facts. I join them in calling for the release of information about this case that will not affect the investigation. The squad car and body camera videos cannot change. Once statements are taken from the officers and witnesses on the scene, the video should be released, as the family and the public have a right to know the truth. I join Mayor Cunningham in calling for members of the public to come forward with any evidence they have.

“The facts need to come out, regardless of which law enforcement agency is investigating the case. We need to continue to take a long and deep look at a justice system that continues to lead to the deaths of so many people of color.”
